Notes

NO ALL-STARS THIS TIME: For the first time since 1999, the Bears were not represented on the Northwest League all-star team.

Yakima had placed at least one player on the team over the past eight seasons, including MVPs Conor Jackson in 2003 and Cyle Hankerd in 2006.

The Bears were the only one of the eight NWL teams to not be represented.

BUT THERE WERE STANDOUTS: Yakima manager Bob Didier, nearing the end of his 43rd year in professional baseball, has formed firm opinions of most of his players on the 2008 Bears.

When asked recently who among the position players had impressed him, he mentioned David Cooper, Brendan Duffy and Alfredo Marte.

"Cooper, overall, has been our most consistent player all year," Didier said. "Even when his batting average was way down, his on-base percentage was still over .400 and he's played well defensively at both second base and shortstop. He's a 44th-round draft choice who's played well and improved, and he's the kind of kid where you might be reading a major league box score in four or five years and you might see his name."

Of Duffy, Didier said, "He's gone from a guy who was playing a little here and there for us early, but he's gotten his average up to around .270 (.268 beginning play Tuesday). He's very good defensively at all three outfield spots, gets to the ball quickly and has an accurate arm. He also has a good on-base percentage (.426, same as Cooper), and can steal a base (14, compared with Cooper's team-best 19).

"And Marte, remember, is a 19-year-old kid who has some talent. He had a prolonged slump, but is starting to work his way through it. He's just now learning that this is a seven day a week, four week a month job and how to deal with it."

And of third baseman Andrew Fie, Didier said, "He's a kid we haven't been able to get to .200 (180), and he's made a lot of errors (a team-high 23), but he's also made a lot of outstanding plays. He has some pop, with four home runs, so there's something there."

Fie is presently tied for seventh on Yakima's single-season errors list, but remember that Mark Reynolds, presently playing the hot corner for Arizona, committed 26 miscues here in 2004.
