YAKIMA -- It's been nearly impossible to derail Snohomish's Gary Lewis this season, but Yakima's BJ Tidrick pulled it off Sunday night in the ARCA West Late Model Challenge Series at Yakima Speedway.
And another local driver, Mike Longton, handled Lewis' pressure pretty well, too.
Battling a weakening battery and Lewis' surging comeback from an earlier mishap, Tidrick led most of the laps in the NAPA Auto Parts 150 and took home a $2,300 winner's check in the second of the Speedway's two big Late Model shows over the Labor Day weekend.
"I knew Gary was going to make it tough on us, but we were able to get it done at the end and get the win," said Tidrick, whose team made crucial adjustments at the 100-lap pit break to help seal the win. "I hated to keep running all those caution laps there at the end with a battery going dead."
Tidrick, who opened the season with a victory at the Speedway's Apple Cup, ran a Northwest Modified race on Saturday and finished second to Shane Mitchell.
Longton, the points leader in the local Late Model series, held on for third behind Lewis and ahead of ARCA points leader Wes Rhodes.
"Having home-track advantage can help us here, but lately it seems like where ever Gary goes that's a home track for him," Longton said in a ARCA release.
Lewis, who at one point won six consecutive races this season, also earned a second-place finish in Saturday's ASA Northwest Tour race behind Snohomish's Jason Fraser. Oregonian Rick Suran finished third and Yakima's Chris Hart, in his first race in five years, came in fourth.
Complete Northwest Tour results and other local classes were unavailable.
Yakima's Erick Hargraves finished the ARCA race in seventh and on the lead lap, and Naches' Owen Riddle was 10th.
Both of the region's top Late Model circuits have one race remaining. The ARCA Series wraps up Sept. 13 at Wenatchee Valley's Super Oval and the ASA Northwest Tour concludes Sept. 20 at Evergreen Speedway.
