Here are this week's volunteer needs in the Yakima Valley:
* TROLLEY HELPERS: Yakima Valley Trolleys will hold a new volunteer day. No prior experience is necessary. The training will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers will learn how to help preserve America's last intact interurban electric railway. The session will be at South Third Avenue and Pine Street. For more information, contact Gregory Johnsen at 425-223-1183.
* THERAPEUTIC RIDING: Pegasus Project is a North American Riding for the Handicapped Association member center providing therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities for people with special needs and disabilities of all ages. Sessions last eight weeks. Volunteers typically volunteer two hours per week, same time, same day each week. Next training is at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
For more information, contact Michelle Chalfant, volunteer coordinator/certified therapeutic riding instructor, at 969-3310 or gchalfant2002@charter.net. Web site for the center is at www.pegasusrides.com.
* CLERICAL STAFF: EPIC Parker Heights Center in Wapato is looking for volunteers to help with its clerical staff. Volunteers will assist with filing, organizing, answering phones and occasionally covering the front desk. Volunteers should have good organizational skills. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are helpful, but not required. All potential volunteers will need to fill out a volunteer packet and have a criminal background check. Contact Mamie Perdue at 248-3950, ext. 108.
* CRISIS LINE: Central Washington Comprehensive Mental Health is looking for volunteers to help with its 24-hour crisis line. Training will be in October for 30 hours over the course of two weekends. Volunteers will be taught how to provide information and referrals; crisis intervention; and legal, medical and general advocacy to victims of crime. Once trained, volunteers will be able to take calls from their own homes. Volunteers will be helping crime victims dealing with sexual assault, identify theft, property crimes, child abuse, elder abuse, homicide, hate crimes, vehicular crimes and others. If interested, call 576-4326.
* MENTOR PROGRAM: The Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration Mentor Program is looking for volunteers. They will help increase a juvenile offender's options for successful re-entry into his or her community. Volunteers will do this by supporting and assisting youths as they work towards their individual goals through weekly contacts and once a month face-to-face activities. Initial mentor training must be completed along with a criminal background check. All interested volunteers must be at least 21 years old. For more information, contact Sirena Phillips at 574-1933.
* Volunteer Opportunities is prepared by Sirena Phillips, volunteer coordinator of Yakima's Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Contact her at 574-1933.
